THE AMERICAN SOCIETY FOR THE HISTORY OF RHETORIC

Panels | Papers | Student Papers | Deadline & Review Criteria | Format | Questions |

The American Society for the History of Rhetoric invites proposals for individual papers and panel sessions on the theme "Creating Sites for Connection and Action." We are interested in proposals treating topics such as:

§ historical sites of rhetorical activity, performance, or instruction

§ continuity, innovation, or rupture in the history of rhetoric

§ comparative or multicultural studies in histories of rhetoric, including histories of rhetoric from international perspectives
We also invite proposals for the following specific topics:

§ An important passage in a text in rhetorical history that has not been widely translated into English

§ A figure in rhetorical history whose significance has been underestimated or ignored

§ Important events or material circumstances whose significance on histories of rhetoric has been underestimated or ignored

Individual proposals are particularly encouraged for the above topics.

PANEL PROPOSALS
Panel proposals should consist of:

§ a panel overview of no more than 75 words
§ abstracts of individual presentations: approximately 300 words each

While panels will generally be composed of three to six participants, creative panel formats are encouraged and should be described in detail in the panel overview.

INDIVIDUAL PROPOSALS

§ Individual proposals, with the exception of student submissions (see below), should consist of an abstract of 300-500 words.

§ Please provide a brief description (approximately 75 words) and upload the complete 300-500 word abstract.

ASHR STUDENT CONFERENCE PANELS AND PAPER AWARD

§ Graduate students who wish to be considered for featured conference panels and the ASHR Student Paper Award should submit completed papers of no more than 25 pages.

§ Please indicate "Student Paper" at the top of the first page

SUBMISSION DEADLINE AND REVIEW CRITERIA
The deadline for submitting panel and individual proposals is 15 February 2006.

§ All panel and individual proposals will be evaluated by two reviewers and ranked according to two primary criteria: scholarly merit and consistency with ASHR's intellectual focus (i.e., history of rhetoric).

§ Scholars submitting to ASHR are asked to exercise discretion in the number of items submitted. ASHR will prefer to accept a single paper (individually submitted or part of panel proposal) from each author, and so an individual's inclusion as paper presenter on multiple panel proposals may disadvantage others on these panels. This advice does not apply to an individual's role as chair and/or respondent in panel proposals.

SUBMISSION FORMAT
All papers and proposals must be submitted online using the All Academic system in one of the following file formats: Microsoft Word, Word Perfect, PDF, RTF. Compressed or zip files will not be accepted.
